What makes a Persian rug so desirable?

Persian carpets are the result of 2.500 years of experience and craftsmanship. They were originally created out of necessity to cover the ground for nomadic peoples and to provide protection against cold and damp. This practical necessity has evolved over time into a respected art form, using natural materials and handcrafted techniques to give each rug its individual personality.

How is a BeyondKnots rug made?

Each of our carpets is the result of traditional craftsmanship. The wool is spun by hand in a time-consuming process and then dyed with natural color pigments. The process of weaving and knotting takes place on traditional looms, with each knot carefully placed by hand. Skilled weavers can set up to 1000 knots per hour, highlighting the artistry and time that goes into each of our rugs.

Before a carpet is finished, any defects are corrected and the edges are refinished. Once finished, the carpet is washed, trimmed and dried in the sun - a process that not only serves to dry but also helps to slightly adjust the tones and soften the contrasts. Finally, each rug is shaped, packaged and made ready for shipment to Hamburg.

What you should know about our weavers

Our handmade carpets are created through a sustainable system that is controlled by the weavers themselves, who decide when and what they work and at what price they sell their handicrafts. They often work in the comfort of their own homes, designing carpets according to their own ideas and tastes.

The production of our village and nomadic carpets follows an extremely personal process in which the weaver spins the wool from her own sheep, dyes it and weaves it in her individual rhythm. They are not bound by specific instructions and do not use pre-made patterns, but instead weave freehand based on their personal memories and preferences.

In contrast, urban carpets, which have a long tradition of carpet weaving, are finer and more perfect carpets that are knotted by hand. Here the weavers usually follow design templates and work according to certain specifications.
