Kashmar carpets are hand-knotted in the small town of Kashmar in the Khorasan province in northeastern Iran. These rugs are considered elegant masterpieces, are usually only available in large sizes, are made from fine, soft virgin wool and are woven with a fairly thick pile, making them very soft.
There are numerous different Kashmar carpets. However, the most famous pattern is the Zirhaki pattern. Zirhaki roughly means "underground" or "valuable discoveries in archaeological excavations" and refers to all types of objects found in Iran's ancient archaeological sites. These items are beautifully depicted on the carpets, almost like an illustration telling significant historical events and stories from ancient Persia.
The colors of this rug vary depending on which side it is viewed from. This means that the carpet has a light and a dark side because of the location of the pile. You can play with this visible effect and decide in advance where the light side of the carpet should be visible.
