Frequently asked Questions

General questions and information about BeyondKnots

An oriental carpet basically consists of warp, weft and pile. The warp and weft form the supporting fabric and the pile forms the running and patterned part. Depending on the type and origin of the carpet, these basic materials are made of different materials. While the warp and weft are often made of cotton, the pile is made of high-quality sheep's wool or silk. In pure silk carpets, the warp and weft, i.e. all components, are also made of silk fibers. The so-called warp threads are long arranged to form the carpet and usually end as fringes on the edge of the carpet. The weft threads run across it. At the intersection points, the pile is created through tied knots, which then forms the visible surface of the carpet.

Each of our rugs is unique, made with a lot of time from the highest quality materials. We receive goods from all over the world, from a wide variety of traditional weavers, artists and designers. Therefore, an individual price is set for each carpet, which is based on the material, time required, individuality and rarity. So every carpet tells its own story. In these works of art, folklore, tradition and history enter into a unique symbiosis with the individual taste of the weavers. If you understand where a particular pattern comes from and what certain symbols represent, older carpets provide fascinating insights into their history. There was a time when one could almost certainly infer from the design of an Oriental rug the country, city, or even village in which it was woven. The global spread of patterns following the great commercial expansion of the early 20th century meant that this is less the case today.

All information about our carpets in the online shop has been created to the best of our knowledge. All sizes have been carefully measured by us and should only have minor deviations. The information on knot density is a general value for the type of carpet, which can vary slightly from carpet to carpet. The pictures are taken at our location with an excellent SLR camera and reflect the colors and details of the carpets very well. Depending on the perspective of the pile, the colors can appear slightly lighter or darker, as in reality. Of course, colors may differ from reality depending on your monitor's brightness and contrast settings. If information is found to be incorrect, the customer will always be notified prior to shipping. The measurements given on the website never include the fringe. It should also be noted that hand-knotted/woven carpets may have minimal variations in size or shape due to the fact that they are manufactured by hand. This is particularly true of nomadic/village carpets, which were woven in more modest conditions.

Our rugs are shipped rolled or folded and can be used immediately after the shipment arrives. Any wrinkles in the carpets will disappear with time and use. In the beginning, the carpets may still fluff a little more in some cases. This is due to excess wool coming off through use and is absolutely normal and nothing to worry about. However, this usually stops after repeated vacuuming. If you have purchased a thinner carpet, we recommend an anti-slip underlay for the carpet so that it cannot slip.

Typically, the difference in value between two similar carpets is determined by different knot densities. The knotting density is measured in the number of knots per m². However, the knot density of oriental carpets is not the only argument for their value. It is also important which materials were used and how good the quality of the wool is, for example. Furthermore, with silk carpets, the actual silk content is important for the value of the carpet. It also depends on the workmanship and beauty of the patterns produced. There are many different factors to consider when determining the value of a carpet.
