Semi-nomadic people called Afshars live in southeastern Iran, near the city of Kerman. Afshar rugs are made of high-quality wool and are usually characterized by a color palette of rust and blue, sometimes with elements of lighter colors. There is often a geometric field in the middle with square rosettes. The design variations are very different and make Afshar carpets the best examples of nomadic art. What is also typical of Afshar carpets is that they are relatively wide in relation to their length. Each rug is a unique, handcrafted one-of-a-kind piece.
Carpets from the province are also sold under the name Sirdjan. In the neighboring town of Shahr Babak, similar carpets are made and sold under the name Afshar Shahr Babak. They have a higher knot density with more detailed patterns.
The colors of this rug vary depending on which side it is viewed from. This means that the carpet has a light and a dark side because of the location of the pile. You can play with this visible effect and decide in advance where the light side of the carpet should be visible.
