The Baluch carpets (also known as Baluch) come from a nomadic ethnic group from the Balochistan region, a border area between Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. They live from agriculture, carpet production and sheep, goat and camel breeding. Traditionally, the carpets are made from sheep's wool or goat hair from the tribes' own herds.
Due to their tribal origins, the carpets are usually smaller due to the high transport requirements, have geometric patterns or stylized floral motifs and are hand-knotted. The classic dark red, brown or blue backgrounds are often contrasted with vibrant patterns in shades of white, ivory, yellow or orange. Baluch carpets are relatively thin, but fairly tightly woven, making them soft and flexible. Perfect for everyday use and lots of exercise. Even today, these carpets still offer excellent value for money and excellent durability.
Baluch carpets from Iran are sold in the city of Mashhad and are known as Mashhad Baluch, while Afghan Baluch carpets are sold in the city of Herat and are therefore known as Herat Baluch carpets.
The colors of this rug vary depending on which side it is viewed from. This means that the carpet has a light and a dark side because of the location of the pile. You can play with this visible effect and decide in advance where the light side of the carpet should be visible.
