Care and cleaning of Kilim carpets and Kilim cushions
How do I properly clean and care for my kilim rug or kilim cushion?
Our Kilim carpets and Nomadic textiles are hand-woven unique pieces – durable, robust and full of history. With the following tips for Care and cleaning you can ensure that your kilim will give you joy for many years.

1. Vacuum regularly – but gently!
Vacuum your kilim 1-2 times a week on a low setting without the rotating brush. Sweep the back regularly to remove dust and dirt. This will significantly extend its lifespan.
2. Remove stains with mild soap
Minor stains can be treated with cold water and a mild soap solution (e.g., castor soap). Apply with a slightly damp sponge, dab gently (do not rub!), then wipe with clean water and pat dry. Allow to air dry.
3. Professional cleaning every 5–10 years
If needed, we'll be happy to help: We'll inspect your kilim free of charge and, if you wish, have it professionally cleaned—of course, by a company specializing in wool carpets and natural dyes.
4. Heavy furniture? Rotate the rug regularly!
Standing furniture can warp the kilim over time. Turn it 180° every few months, especially if it's used on one side or exposed to direct sunlight. Many kilims are reversible—occasionally turning them over helps prevent wear.
5. Protect fringes
Please never comb. Instead, gently shake or flip your hair back and forth. At the first sign of damage to the fringe, we recommend a minor repair—it's inexpensive and prevents more serious damage to the weave.
6. Avoid moisture at all costs
Wool thrives in dry conditions. Extremely humid conditions can distort the kilim's structure or, in the worst case, cause mold. Natural dyes can also bleed, so never store it wet.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How often should I clean a kilim?
Regular vacuuming is sufficient. Professional cleaning is recommended every 5–10 years, depending on usage.
Can a kilim be put in the washing machine?
No! Please never machine wash – the texture and colors can be damaged. Always hand wash or have it professionally cleaned.
How do I store my kilim properly?
Rolled up (not folded!), wrapped in a cotton cloth, and stored in a dry, dark place. Cedarwood or lavender sachets prevent moth infestation.
